Infrastructure in Development

Studying infrastructure means studying the development of the core dynamics of society. It is to understand how humans are both shaping and being shaped by their environments; from the advancement of cities through the development of construction techniques and roads, to boosting global health by finding ways to bring water to our homes, while carrying waste away from them.

One of the key challenges in this day and age, is how to deal with the urbanisation rate of the roughly 7.7 billion people that walk the earth. The sharp increase of this number, particularly prevalent in developing countries, demands that new solutions are found in the fields of urban development, mobility, waste management, and water and sanitation.

The Foundations

Besides the fact that we will have to share our living environments with more people than we did in the past, we also have to prepare our towns, cities, and various networks for societies’ transition to new energy and construction resources, as well as the effects that climate change will have on the planet.

Also having to take into account the housing and infrastructure needs in the wake of international crises, as well as the results of mass migration, means that the infrastructure sector is constantly looking for innovative solutions to construction that are both sustainable and cost-effective. At GOPA Infra, we have 70 permanent staff members and approximately 1,200 experts worldwide working hard to establish a sustainable and supportive framework to address these challenges based on the following four Business Areas:

Architecture & Urban Development

Although urbanisation rates are on the rise at a global level, its effects are especially felt in developing countries, where it is expected that, by 2030, 80 per cent of the urban population will be concentrated.

It is our experts’ top priority that urban areas are developed in a ‘smart’ way – meaning that they account for modern information and communication technology, sustainable energy solutions, and sustainable materials – while not forgetting linkages to rural zones.

Transport & Mobility

With digital communication allowing us to stay in touch with people and events in almost every location imaginable and the boundless opportunities presented by international trade and(online) markets, so does the need increase for people and goods to transport themselves safely, comfortably and for a reasonable price.

Our consultants help governments, enterprises and cooperating agencies with their necessity of constantly having to reimagine how to balance sustainability and effective transport and mobility.

Waste Management

Until recently, it was not a mainstream thought that one of the problematic consequences of a growing world population is that, as societies, we will also urgently have to look for solutions to the vast amounts of solid waste products that are discarded by every person, every day.

Although evironmental awareness slowly gains traction in a number of countries, this is often not the case in developing countries. With decades of experience, we are helping current waste managers worldwide make a molehill out of a mountain.

Water & Sanitation

Over the past decade, the world has increasingly been forced to face the realities of climate change. Sea levels have risen due to melting ice caps and summers have reached unparalelled temperatures, which spawned severe droughts that have laid waste to crops and triggered humanitarian crises in developing countries.

These extremities draw our attention to the vital role that water plays in our lives and the affirmative action that is needed to preserve the natural resources we have. Our experts have developed comprehensive, integrated approaches that balance ecological and economic needs in water & sanitation management.
